Replace Your 4” Media Type Filter

Large_filter

WHY DO THIS?

In less than two minutes, you can ensure that the air you breathe is clean, reduce household dust and prolong the life of your furnace. Plus, by replacing your air filter, you’ll be ahead of the game – only one in five Americans currently pays attention to their furnace filters! A new furnace will cost you anywhere from $3,000 to $5,000 dollars. A new 4” media type air filter? Less than $50.

How To:

Note It may seem like a tempting idea to stack four 1” air filters to make one 4” filter, but resist! Not only will this not work, it won’t fit because the 1” filters are pleated.

  1. 1

Locate your current filter. Some filters will be located in the bottom, some in the back and some in the front (but behind a panel). If you have trouble finding your furnace’s filter, check your owner’s manual for the location.

  2. 2

Remove and examine your current filter. If you’re not sure whether or not it’s time to change your filter, hold your dirty filter up to the light. If you can no longer see through the filter, than it’s time to change it.

  3. 3

Choose your new filter. If you simply want to protect your blower motor from dirt, then go for the least expensive option. If you’re more interested in keeping your air free of pollutants, however, opt for a middle-of-the-road price when shopping for filters (about $50). Note: More expensive filters will capture more dust, pollen and pet danger, which means they’ll become clogged faster and air flow will get restricted. Restricted air flow can lead to premature furnace failure, so it’s really important that you change more expensive filters regularly!

  4. 4

Change the filter. You’re finally read to change the filter! Pull the dirty filter out and replace it with a new one. Make sure that the arrow on the filter is pointing towards the blowing motor. Done. Note: If you’ve removed a panel on your furnace, replace it now.
