  1. 1

Keep it closed. After every shower, close your shower curtain so there aren’t any folds. This will prevent unwanted company like mold and mildew from setting up shop, because they love the damp, warm folds of a closed curtain.

  2. 2

Make your own spray. Does your plastic liner have soap scum? No problem! To kill the pesky scum on your plastic liner, make your own mold and mildew remover with tea tree oil, vinegar and water. Add the mixture to a spray bottle.

  3. 3

Keep your spray handy. Once or twice a week, shake up your concoction and liberally spray the spray on the inside of your shower curtain. This will prevent any future mold or mildew growth.

  4. 4

To clean a cloth curtain: If you have a cloth curtain, it can be washed as part of your regular cycle. Toss it in the washing machine and add some detergent. Dry it completely, and then hang it back up. You're done!

  5. 5

To clean a vinyl curtain or liner: Your vinyl curtain or liner can still be machine washed - there are just a few special tricks to cleaning it! Toss it in its own load, because it has a tendency to tangle up other items. Make sure the curtain or liner isn't twisted on itself and then add 1 cup of white vinegar or bleach. Note: If you have small kids or pets, we recommend you opt for white vinegar. Run the load on the hottest setting. Once the cycle is done, remove the curtain or liner from the machine and hang it back up on the shower rod. Tip: To pull moisture away from the liner and quicken the drying process, turn on your bathroom exhaust fan.

  6. 6

Be realistic about replacements. If you shower curtain is beyond repair, it’s best to buy a new plastic liner. They run for about $5 so you won’t break the bank – just be sure to spray your new one regularly before it develops soap scum!
