The average US state receives 13 inches of rain in the spring – and most get more! Imagine what that rainfall will do to your home if your downspouts are damaged! Prevent excessive water from pooling near your foundation or seeping into your basement by maintaining your downspouts this spring. You’ll save thousands of dollars in foundation repairs.
Take a close look where your downspout is dumping water. If water is flowing away from your home, then you’re okay. If water is pooling, the excess water could cause damage to your foundation and even basement flooding.
If your downspouts are dumping water less than five feet away from your house, redirect the water with gutter extensions. Gutter extensions can be found at your local hardware store for about $10 a foot.
There are three types of common downspout extensions: manual hinged extensions, automatic extensions and underground extensions. The extension type you use is simply your preference as long as the existing downspout is extended at least 5 to 6 feet away from the house.
