Shop at the right time. Sales and deals come at all different times of the year, depending on what you’re looking for. Desks, bookshelves and other office furniture tends to be cheaper in January. If you’re looking for dining room furniture, wait until October. Patio furniture usually goes on sale at the end of the summer. If you need a new mattress, try to go shopping in either May or November. Also, always be aware of the next regular holiday (such as Independence Day, Labor Day, and Memorial Day) because department stores will generally run major sales.
Buy carefully. Coffee tables may come and go pretty quickly, but major items like your mattress or desk can last for ten years or more! Treat these purchases like the major investments they are by taking your time when you pick them out. Nothing wastes money faster than having to rebuy a big piece of furniture because you weren’t happy with the first one!
Don’t be afraid of IKEA. It’s popular for a reason! For small items like bed side tables or dresser units, IKEA offers functional pieces at a great price (although you do have to set it up yourself). These may not be the furniture that you pass down to your children, but they can really help you fill a room without emptying your wallet.
Buy in bulk. Just like toilet paper and toothbrushes, buying furniture in bulk can save you a big chunk of money. Buying bedroom and living room sets instead of one-off pieces can save you up to 30 percent or more off the list price!
