WHY DO THIS?

An amazing cup of coffee in the morning can help you start the day like a boss. But only if you have the right equipment! There are four main types of coffee machines out there, and each one has different advantages depending on your tastes and needs. Use this guide to choose the one that’s right for you!

5 MINUTES
EASY

How To:

  1. 1

    AUTOMATIC DRIP

This is the most commonly used coffee maker, and for good reason! They’re simple and fast to operate, with very little effort on the brewer’s part.

    Pros:
    1.) Quick and easy
2.) Programmable models (so you can wake up to fresh coffee)
3.) Warming pot keeps coffee hot for hours

    Cons:
    1.) Middle-of-the-road flavor
2.) Coffee filters are a hassle

Buy an automatic drip if: You value consistency and convenience over award-winning java.
We Recommend: Cuisinart Brew Central 1200

  2. 2

    CAPSULE MACHINES

Also known as pod coffee makers, these puppies are enjoying a meteoric rise in popularity, probably due to their hip design and focus on convenience.

    Pros:
    1.) Lightning-fast coffee prep
    2.) No filters, no mess
    3.) Perfect for single servings

    Cons
1.) Limited variety (both in coffee brands and roasting strength)
2.) Coffee pods are more expensive than coffee grounds
3.) Your coffee will never technically be “fresh”

Buy a capsule-based machine if: Time is of the essence (or you’re the only coffee drinker at home).
We Recommend: Nespresso U Pure Black

  3. 3

    ESPRESSO MAKER

These are similar to automatic drip machines, but are able to produce much stronger flavors because hot water is passed through the coffee grounds at a high pressure.

    Pros:
    1.) Strong shots of espresso
2.) Saves you money (if you currently buy espresso at coffee shops)
3.) Makes your kitchen look cooler

    Cons:
1.) Messy, more complicated brew process
2.) Higher upfront cost than alternatives
3.) Flavors may be too strong for some palates

Buy an Espresso Machine if: You’ve always wanted to play barista at home.
    We Recommend: Capresso EC Pro

  4. 4

    FRENCH PRESS

This is the classic way to brew your coffee. However, brewing with a French press requires more skill and finesse than the other options – you’ll need to boil water, stir, and time your “press” carefully for ideal cup of joe.

    Pros:
    1.) Full, rich flavor
    2.) No electricity required
3.) Total control of temperature and brewing time

    Cons:
    1.) Manual brew process
2.) Coffee cools quickly (unless placed in a thermos)
3.) Generally, smaller brewing sizes (4-6 cups vs. 12+ on larger machines)

Buy a French Press if: You usually have time to spare in the morning.
We Recommend: CHAMBORD press by Bodum
