A plain rug is nice, but if you’re willing to be a little daring with your decorating, you can make a few upgrades that will launch it into the design stratosphere! Make this DIY chevron rug and transform a mediocre room into a modern living space.
Measure the rug and find a large scrap of cardboard or paper that is thick enough to stop paint from soaking through.
Use this cardboard as your template for a consistent pattern. Cut the cardboard with scissors into a “V” shape or “zig-zag” pattern for a traditional chevron style.
Take a pencil and trace along the borders of your template to mark where to paint, and then use painters tape to tape the lines. Press the tape firmly to prevent your paint from seeping into the white areas.
Mix your favorite color of acrylic craft paint with textile medium paint mixer. You can find paint mixer at your local hardware store. Follow the bottle’s instructions for the exact amounts. You can find textile mediums in most craft and hobby stores for around $10. Mixing acrylic paint with the textile medium paint mixer will turn the paint into washable, permanent fabric paint.
Then start painting! Hard-bristled brushes will work best because they apply the paint more evenly across the rug.
Let the paint dry for several hours. Carefully remove the tape and voila!
