A garbage disposal is handy to have around, but if you don’t de-stink it every once in a while, your kitchen will start to smell less like a food preparation haven and more like a dumpster. Luckily, a quick de-stink is super easy, all you need is a lemon and a few tablespoons of baking soda.

Pour 3-4 tablespoons of baking soda down the disposal. Baking soda is a sodium bicarbonate, which naturally maintains pH balances. It eliminates odors rather than just covering them up by neutralizing both acids and bases.
Microwave a lemon for 15 seconds. Then squeeze the juice into the disposal. The acidic lemon juice will react with the baking soda and should fizz. Let the concoction do its work for five minutes.
Cut the lemon you used into quarters. Then, turn on the cold water and the disposal. With the disposal on and the cold water running, drop your quartered lemon rind into the disposal. Let it run for about a minute.
Reminder: It’s a good idea to run water when you use the disposal and keep it running for a few seconds after you turn the disposal off.
