If you have a room in your house that doesn’t get a ton of (or any) natural light, there are a few easy changes you can make that will brighten things up. Not only will this make the room a more pleasant place to spend time in, it will also make it feel bigger! Lighten up your dark room with these inexpensive décor changes.
Hang mirrors. Hanging (or leaning) large mirrors in a dark room lightens it up by taking a small amount of light and reflecting it around the room.
Paint it white. Or cream. Or eggshell blue. Light colors add a fresh, bright look to any room because they reflect more light than dark colors such as deep purple or black. This is also a great trick for small rooms because the brighter a room is, the bigger it will feel!
Decorate like a minimalist. The fewer objects cluttering a room, the lighter the room will appear. Unnecessary objects piled on furniture make a room appear small and dark. To learn how to de-clutter your life, read: Less is More: Furniture You Don’t Really Need.
Decorate with light-colored furniture. Heavy wooden furniture may look nice, but it can also darken a room and make it feel small. Instead, choose small, light-colored furniture for your small rooms and move the dark stuff to a larger space. Also, don’t hesitate to paint dark furniture white or other light colors.
Use lamps. This may seem obvious, but fill your dark room with lamps instead of relying on your overhead light. This will lighten the room from several angles, which adds extra dimension and brightness.
Wash your windows. Clean windows allow more light to enter the room and brighten things up. To give your windows a full spa treatment, read: Inspect and Maintain Your Windows.
