A warm bath may be a peaceful end to a stressful day, but the bathroom isn’t all comfort and relaxation! In fact, around 235,000 people end up in the emergency room from bathroom-related injuries each year. But don’t start brushing your teeth in a helmet just yet! Here are five fuss-free ways to avoid common bathroom dangers.

Lock up your electronics. In the bathroom, where water and electricity are plentiful, the risk of electrocution is very real and should be taken seriously! Always keep bathroom appliances (like hairdryers and electric razors) unplugged when they’re not in use and store them in a cabinet far away from the tub, toilet and sink. For back-up protection, make sure your GFIs are in working order.

Adjust the heat. Most water heaters can be adjusted to reach a maximum temperature. To prevent surprise burns (but still have plenty of steam for relaxing showers) avoid going hotter than 120 degrees F. This is especially important for households with young children. Add a night light. If your bathroom is pitch-black at night, midnight visits can easily turn into late-night falls (which then turn into late-night emergency room visits).
