Apparently, the thought “I can’t wait to go to work!” isn’t so crazy. In fact, according to a recent study by Penn State University, stress levels are actually lower at work than at home. And, according to a recent BrightNest survey, 77% of us feel stressed at home. Yikes!
Why? At work most people have set tasks and checklists. If you’re collaborating, the work is allocated and each team member is responsible for his or her part. At home, people aren’t always as cooperative. Also, work comes with a tangible reward: money. The benefit of chores and home maintenance are more intangible, so people can start to feel overwhelmed and under motivated.
The solution: Make a daily list of your home tasks so you can check them off, feel accomplished and then enjoy a designated reward.
Here are 10 common at-home tasks and a suitable reward for accomplishing them:
When you pick up that hamper, you just committed yourself to at least a 2-hour project from start to finish.
Reward: Treat yourself to watching your guilty-pleasure TV show while folding the laundry.
We know how easy it is to let those suckers pile up.
Reward: Listen to your favorite podcast or save a new album to audit while doing the dishes.
Using a mower or weedwacker is a straight gun-show workout!
Reward: Have your favorite cocktail on a Tuesday if you face up to your yard.
Moving furniture to do the full-on-bedroom clean can be less fun than paying your credit card bill.
Reward: Have a delicious piece of chocolate after de-dusting your private quarters.
This one tends to sneak by, doesn’t it? It’s not a room, and it doesn’t look as dirty as it actually is, but cleaning the steps is serious physical labor!
Reward: Draw a hot bath after your stairmaster-esque workout and take a load off. Don’t be afraid to bath salt it up.
Your main living space is often representative of your life in that moment. Haven’t picked up the shoes you wore over the weekend? It happens.
Reward: Have some fun dancing in your living room once you clean up the space. Taylor Swift music will make this awesome.
It’s difficult to not just fall into bed, especially after a long week at the office. If you haven’t changed your sheets in a while, motivate yourself with a reward.
Reward: Regardless of the time, curl in bed with a good book or take a catnap in your fresh linens.
It’s easy to adopt an out of sight, out of mind mentality, but if you haven’t cleaned your fan blades in awhile, there is a lot of dust hanging out up there.
Reward: Keep break-and-bake cookie dough in the fridge and treatcho’self.
Got stank? Put your shoes on and empty those bins!
Reward: Then you can put your feet up and read your favorite magazine.
