We Heart This Valentine's DIY Project

If you’re looking for the perfect Valentine’s Day gift idea, the search is over. Upcycled crayons to the rescue! This homemade Valentine’s Day gift is so easy that even the busiest, most uncrafty person can pull it off. It’s also perfect as a fun afternoon project with your kids! Here’s how to make your own heart-shaped crayons:

You’ll need: a heart-shaped baking mold (we used this one from Amazon), Crayola crayons, a baking sheet and an oven.

Tip: If you have a metal baking mold, use a little cooking spray before you bake – this will make it easier to remove the crayons once they’re done.

1. Preheat Your Oven to 150 Degrees

2. Choose Your Crayon Colors

If you don’t have any broken crayons lying around, use a dull knife to chop whole crayons into small pieces. Also, be sure to remove the paper! You can easily remove paper by soaking your crayons in a bowl of water, first.

3. Add Crayons to the Heart-Shaped Molds

Fill up the mold about a third of the way (around 4-5 small crayon pieces). Play around with your color combinations to achieve a “confetti” look. Tip: To give these hearts a little sparkle, add some glitter to the bottom of your molds before you add the crayons!

4. Place Baking Mold in Oven

Carefully place your baking mold in the oven. If you have a flexible mold like the one we used, put the mold on a baking sheet so that it’s easier to remove once they’re done.

5. Bake Until Wax is Completely Melted

This should take about 10 minutes. Let the tray cool completely before you remove your new multicolored, sparkly crayons from their molds. Once cooled, flip over your mold and pop them out! Tip: If the crayons stick in your mold, place the tray in the freezer for a half hour and try to pop them out again.
