Take a Walk on the Wooden Side: Decorate with Faux Bois

Faux bois (meaning “false wood” in French) is a design element you’ve probably seen before but never spent a ton of time thinking about. It was all the rage in the early 1900s, and now it’s making a comeback as a way to use the outdoors as home décor inspiration. Here are four of our favorite ways to incorporate the warm and woodsy look of faux bois into your home:

Go beyond earth tones. In nature, tree bark is usually brown or white, but that doesn’t mean you have to restrict yourself to these same colors inside of your home! Go purple, go red, go yellow – whatever color palette matches your personal style is fair game!

Make a woodgrain rug. Embrace the patterns found on the surface of bark by making this do-it-yourself woodgrain rug from A Beautiful Mess. The best part about this project is that the supplies only cost $10! Place it on your porch as a doormat or use it as a decorative entryway piece.

Don’t be afraid to go soft. Even though faux bois is rustic, it doesn’t have to be rough. Don’t be shy about using this style on a softer note – fabrics, throw pillows, blankets, table runners and tea towels can expose the gentle side of faux bois.

Add twig décor to the mix. Don’t stop with just faux bois! Bring the outdoors inside your home – literally – by adding twigs or small branches to your woodland-inspired rooms. The patterns will compliment each other beautifully, and you’ll feel great about your trendy (and savvy) décor.
