Extra virgin, Spanish, Greek, or Californian. Regardless of what type you buy, olive oil has become a staple in your sauté pan. Bring this culinary king outside of the kitchen, and try one of these tricks around the house. There’s no need to get fancy. A less expensive domestic olive oil will work just as well for other domestic purposes.

Polish furniture – Olive oil can help remove dust from wooden furniture and make it shine. Add one teaspoon of olive oil to a quarter cup of lemon juice, and you’ve got a non-toxic polish for your tables and chairs.

Oil measuring cups – Rub your measuring cups with a little olive oil before you cook. That way, gluey substances like honey, mustard, and syrup won’t stick to the cup and will be easier to clean. Olive oil is also a great greasing agent for your baking pans. Remove paint from your skin – Rub olive oil onto your dirty skin and allow the oil to soak in for five minutes. Rinse with soap and water. If the paint is stubborn, let the oil sit for a few more minutes. It doesn’t matter if it’s latex house paint or watercolors, this technique will help get the paint off your skin.

Clean your garden tools - Spritz some olive oil on your tools to cut down on dirt buildup. When the dirt is gone, simply wipe the tools clean.

Fix a squeaky door – Use a rag or cotton swab to apply olive oil to the top of any squeaky hinges in your home. If this is a problem in your home, and you need an alternative to WD-40, check out our customized To-Do: Fix A Squeaky Door.

Shine stainless steel – First, wipe off any debris on the stainless steel surface. Then, pour the olive oil on a clean, soft cloth. Buff in a circular motion with firm pressure until the surface shines.

Now you can use the rest of that olive oil bottle for your next dinner party. Pair this delicious feta dip with a fresh baguette. The recipe only has five ingredients and  it only takes five minutes to make! It’s embarrassingly easy, and sure to please your guests.
