Must. Dank. Stale. Stank. No matter what you call it, this particular cocktail of mold, mildew and stale air has a pungent, noticeable smell. And it’s definitely a smell you don’t want in your kitchen or bathroom.

Left untreated, mold can become a serious health hazard. So, if you discover a major mold problem, it’s best to contact a professional to take care of the issue.

But, if your problem is just a little bit o’ stank in the bathroom or kitchen, check out these common culprits:

Bathroom

Culprit #1: Shower Liner

Your shower liner is the most likely source of mustiness in your bathroom. To remove the smell, run your shower liner through the spin cycle with detergent and a ½ cup of white vinegar and then soak it overnight in salt water to help prevent future mildew.

Culprit #2: Towels

Unless your towels are brand-new, they may be the reason your bathroom smells funky (even if they’re clean!). To give smelly towels a new life, try one of these four smell-fighting tricks. To prevent stink in the future, don’t let your towels stay wet! Dry them as soon as possible to prevent unwelcome smells.

Culprit #3: Leaky Pipes

The stench may be from sitting water. Check behind your toilet and under the sink for leaky pipes, and inspect the floor and cabinets for visible signs of water damage. If you do have a leaky pipe, call a professional to get the problem fixed so you can say buh-bye to stink.

Kitchen

Culprit #1: Kitchen Drain

There may be a moldy monster of food debris living at the bottom of your kitchen drain, which is causing your kitchen to stink. To prevent smells, pour a mixture of 1 cup salt and 1 cup baking soda down your drain. Then, pour 1 quart of boiling water down the drain once a month to keep the smells away.

Culprit #2: Dirty Dishwasher

To prevent your dishwasher from stinking, do this once a month: pour one cup of distilled white vinegar in the bottom of the dishwasher and run a complete cycle on the hottest temperature setting.

Culprit #3: Fridge

To prevent fridge stink, start by doing a fridge audit and toss anything that’s expired or just old. Then, if the problem lingers after rotten items are tossed, try one of these deodorizing methods. The best method for you will depend on the level of your stink!
