Can openers can be tricky to get fully dry after cleaning them, which means they’re prone to rust. If you’re the owner of a rusty-scupper opener, don’t throw it out just yet. Here’s the best way to clean it:
1. Fill a bowl with white vinegar or apple cider vinegar until you can fully submerge the can opener.
2. Let it to soak for at least three hours (you can go for an entire night if needed).
3. Take an old toothbrush or rag and scrub the rust off of the metal.
4. Wash the can opener with dish soap and leave it in a sunny place until it’s completely dry. Make sure all the gears are dry before it’s put back in the drawer, which eliminates the risk for new rust buildup.
