Last summer, we wrote about five secret uses for your favorite home appliances. It was a good time, but one of our tips – cooking salmon in the dishwasher – raised a few eyebrows around the office. There were two reasons for the skepticism:

  1. The recipe called for wrapping the salmon in aluminum foil, which left the potential for tearing and a sudsy, ruined meal.
  2. To avoid old food bits in your fresh dinner, it was best to “cook” your salmon alone in the dishwasher, which isn’t the most efficient practice.

But recently, we heard a version of this recipe that silences both these worries and couldn’t wait to share! Here’s the trick:

Put your salmon in a sealed mason jar instead of foil.

Boom. Just like that, your dishwasher-cooking quandaries are over. Not only is the jar super durable, but you can cook your fish in a crowded dishwasher and never worry about old food bits or your friend’s germs joining your dinner. Simply place your mason jar on the top rack and run a normal cycle.

Just to be on the safe side, we tested out the mason jar method before publishing this tip. The result? Moist and delicious poached salmon! Tip: To ensure that your salmon is cooked evenly, use one mason jar per serving.
