This kitchen in Herndon, Virginia, had barely been touched since the 1990s before the homeowners hired Moss Building & Design in Chantilly, Virginia, to update it.

While the homeowners liked the general layout of their kitchen, they desired a better design for entertaining guests, says Kristen Corbett, customer care manager for Moss Building & Design.
“The homeowners wanted to update in order to address a lack of seating and functionality,” Corbett says. “These two aspects were the most important things the homeowners wanted to address.”

To accomplish this, the company changed the kitchen island’s location. Then they nixed some wall cabinets and added storage space elsewhere.
“Principal Designer Erin Hoopes suggested that a knee wall be integrated, complete with a beverage station, to address an unused space with the kitchen column between the family room and kitchen,” Corbett says.
