There’s a bit of productivity wisdom going around these days called the five-minute rule. It basically means that if you can do a task in five minutes or less, do it right away instead of putting it off for later.
We dig this idea, so we figured it’d be helpful to provide a little bit of five-minute task fodder, starting with the bathroom. Here are five tasks you can tackle in five minutes:
Drop 2 Alka-Seltzer tabs in the water and let them bubble the gunk away. The effervescence and the citric acid function as cleaning agents, which removes your toilet bowl rings. To complete the task, scrub the bowel with a toilet brush and wipe down the lid and tank with an all-purpose cleaner and a rag.
Shaving cream for the win. Apply shaving cream to your mirror with a paper towel. Then wet a new paper towel and wipe the cream away. This will add a protective layer over the mirror which prevents it from fogging during steamy showers. Pus, it shouldn’t leave any streaks in your mirror. We recommend using Barbasol because it’s both economic and efficient.

So technically this takes more than five minutes, but you’ll only be actively working for the time it takes to throw your shower curtain into the washing machine. Add some dirty towels and a half-cup of detergent to the load. When it’s finished, hang the shower curtain back in your shower and spread it fully to dry (if it’s it not spread out, mold could grow), and make sure the bottom is inside the tub for the drips!
Note: Most plastic and fabric shower curtains are washing machine safe, but be sure to check the label before washing.
Grab a used dryer sheet from your laundry bin, sprinkle it with warm water and wipe away the mineral deposits in your glass shower. Dryer sheets are known for their scum-scraping powers. When the scum is gone, you will need to rinse the door down a few times.
Sprinkle some coarse-grained salt all over your bathtub. Cut a grapefruit in half and use it as a sponge to scrub your bathtub back to good as new. And that’s not all—when you rinse the salt down your drain, you’ll be doing yourself another favor: pouring salt brine down your drain will help prevent nasty soap buildup.
Tip: Save the second half of your grapefruit as a snack!
