Celebrate Much? 5 Ways to Cure Your Holiday Hangover

The carols have been sung, the presents have been unwrapped and the New Year’s Eve parties – champagne and all – have run their course. The holidays are officially over.

How do you feel?

Got a bit of headache? Lack of energy? Sensitivity to multi-colored lights? Yep, sounds like you have a wee-bit of a holiday hangover. If you overindulged this season – binging on everything from holiday decorations to DIY wrapping paper ideas – it’s easy to feel a little worn out when January rolls around. Lucky for you, there’s a cure! By making your life easier and sprucing up the house a bit, you’ll feel better in no time.

Think of these steps as the morning after aspirin-and-Gatorade combo to your holiday hangover.

Ditch the Christmas Tree

Your tree is a beacon of holiday cheer from Thanksgiving to Christmas, but come New Years it can become a looming reminder of festive times now in the past. Do yourself a favor and get rid of that Douglas-fir ASAP. For a green disposal option, contact your local waste management facility – many of them collect old trees and turn them into mulch.

Say No to Clutter

Between piles of presents and a slew of houseguests, your home can fill up with “stuff” pretty quickly. Nip that clutter in the bud! Take the time to organize your children’s new toys, spruce up the kitchen and clean out your closet (especially if Santa brought you a new outfit or two).

Don’t Cling to Leftovers

Aunt Jill’s apple pie may be the best thing in the world, but that doesn’t mean it will last forever. Refrigerated leftovers are only safe to eat for four days. If you wait longer than that, the risk of food poisoning increases considerably. So, pay attention to the calendar and clean out your fridge when the time comes!

Make Laundry Easier

It can be hard to find the time for laundry duty during the holidays, which means Hamper Mountain may be forming in the closet. Laundry is never fun, but there is a way to make it a little less painful. For starters, stop folding your socks and underwear in 2014! It’s not necessary, and it will save you a ton of time in the long run. For more tips, read: 7 Ways to Hate Laundry Less.

Clean Your Dishwasher

If the tail end of December usually comes with multiple turkey dinners and more pies than you’d care to mention, your dishwasher probably took a beating. If you don’t clean it out, you’ll be picking bits of holiday-feast remnants off your plates for the next few months. Yuck! Take 15 minutes to clean your dishwasher and start 2014 with a fresh slate. You won’t regret it.
