Have you ever looked around a room and felt like it could use a little extra oomph? Don’t run to the store to buy new accents just yet – add a splash of paint to something you already own, instead! Here are five common household objects that can be transformed with a touch of paint:

1. Storage Baskets

Storage containers aren’t generally manufactured with an eye for home-design style, but this can be fixed! Got a basket near your entryway? Paint the bottom edge a bright color. Are there drawers in your bathroom? Grab a big paintbrush and gussy up the front face of each drawer.

2. Trivets

If you want to add a little color to your kitchen, paint a trivet and put it on display. Hand-paint the edges of your trivet and place it on your table to give your dining room a pop of color.

3. Planters

One of my unofficial mottos is, “Planters should never be boring.” Whether your plants live indoors or out, their homes can be easily transformed into a décor piece with a little painter’s tape and spray paint. To add a geometric flair to your pots, tape off diagonal lines, parallel stripes, or any other pattern and spray away!

4. Furniture

If you want to really revamp a room in your house, add a splash of paint to your furniture (literally). There’s no “clean” way to do this, so choose your furniture (we suggest a nightstand or dresser that could use an upgrade) and grab some paint. Blow off some steam by tossing some paint onto the front of the drawers or give your dresser a speckled look with an old toothbrush. Dip the toothbrush in paint, bend the bristles back with your thumb and spray some color onto the front.

5. Ceramics

If you have a decorative vase along your mantle or a ceramic teapot on display in your kitchen, show it some love! You can add a lot of personality to plain objects by covering a specific area with bright paint. For teapots, cover everything except the handle or top and then spray paint it with neon pink. For a vase, tape off everything except the rim and then coat it with the color of your choice.
