If you’ve been thinking about wallpapering your bedroom for a while, but you’re still on the fence, debate no longer! From floral patterns to stripes and lace, wallpaper gives you design freedom you can’t find in a paint can. Plus, well-applied wallpaper lasts 15 – 25 years and requires minimal maintenance. Paint, on the other hand, chips, flakes, dulls and needs regular touchups. Use these steps as a guide to great looking wallpaper.

The 7 best practices for perfect wallpapering:

  1. Take the time to repair any holes or cracks in your wall before you paper them. If you have any holes or dents, read: There’s A Hole In My Wall.

  2. If you have minor imperfections on your wall, use spackle and sandpaper to smooth them away. Don’t apply wallpaper primer until your wall looks smooth to the naked eye.

  3. When you cut your wallpaper, cut the vertical strips 4 inches longer than the wall height. Sometimes the patterns don’t line up perfectly and you’ll need to move a strip up or down an inch so that it aligns. This way, you have wiggle room to line up any patterns correctly and can then trim away the excess length afterwards.

  4. Before you place any paper on your wall, use a tape measure and a pencil to mark where each strip of paper will be placed. Use the markings like a road map when you’re hanging the paper.

  5. Apply your paper one vertical strip at a time. This is a team activity: Have one person hold the paper in place at the bottom while another person works from the top down, applying the paper against the wall.

  6. Once your paper is up, you only have about 10 minutes until it dries, so make adjustments right away! Slowly and carefully push any air bubbles towards the borders.

  7. Once all strips are in place, wash off excess glue with a damp sponge.

Voila! You’re papered. If you’re still torn between paper or paint, check out these modern wallpaper looks:
