From adding to the ambiance to catching bits and pieces of food, placemats do a lot for a dinner table. Next time you sit down for a meal, try to remember – When was the last time you cleaned your placemat? Whether you’re keen on cloth, bamboo, vinyl or recycled placemats, keep them clean and your table looking great with these tips.
Inspect. First, inspect your placemats for dried food particles. Use a butter knife to scrape off any easily removable leftovers that fell off of your fork. Scrape gently so you don’t damage the material.
Prepare. Next, grab two containers that are wide enough to hold your placemats (They will eventually need to soak in these containers). Casserole dishes often work well for this. Fill up one container with hot water and add two tablespoons of liquid detergent. Fill up the other container with cold water.
Scrub. Once that’s ready, grab a soft bristled brush and dip it into the hot, soapy water. Lightly brush away stains or food on your placemats by brushing in a circular motion. For tough stains, soak the entire placemat in the hot water.
Soak. After you’ve scrubbed out your stains, place each placemat in the cold water for several minutes.
Rinse. If still soapy, rinse under your kitchen faucet. If you have cloth placemats, gently ring them out under running water.
Dry. Hang your placemats to dry on a hanging rack, clothesline, or on top of several paper towels.
