If only stains could be erased like pencil on paper. Life would be much simpler. But unfortunately, household stains can be hard to beat — which is why we wrangled up five of the most common stains and found out how to remove them.

Ring Around the Bathtub

There’s one major ingredient that will remove this grime: BAKING SODA. Using water and baking soda, create a paste and let that work on the stains for about an hour. Then wipe away with water and a normal bathtub cleaner.

Tomato Sauce Spilled on Carpet

For synthetic rugs, DAB THE STAIN with a detergent solution (1/4 cup of clear dishwashing liquid plus 1 cup of water). Wait several minutes for the solution to break down the stain; then repeat with a vinegar solution (1 cup of vinegar and 2 cups of water). Rinse by blotting with lukewarm water. For natural carpet, spray with the detergent solution and an ammonia solution (1 tablespoon of ammonia mixed with a ½ cup of water), switching between the two until the stain disappears.

Red Wine Spilled on Light-Colored Countertops

MOST EXPERTS RECOMMEND wiping countertops with baking soda and water, then wiping that down with dishwashing liquid and water, followed by alcohol or bleach if any stain remains.

Marks on Walls from Furniture

You can use an all-purpose cleaner, sprayed on a sponge, and wipe the wall down. But the easiest tool? MR. CLEAN MAGIC ERASER should remove scuffs from your walls from furniture or other household items in no time.

Dingy, Yellow Walls from Previous Tenants/Owners

First, WASH THE WALLS down with dish soap and water. Then, sponge on a bleach and water solution (1 cup bleach and 1 gallon of water), and let it sit 10 minutes. Scrub with a soft-bristled brush and add more bleach solution if necessary.
