Sure, carpeted floors are great for family rooms and chilly mornings, but they’re not necessarily known for being fashionable or “cool.” We can fix that!
Here are four great design tips to help you bring carpet back – or at least make it less ugly:
If you can, choose a funky pattern. Patterned carpeting can do wonders for hiding stains or blemishes, so this is a great solution for high-traffic areas such as the family room, or areas prone to spills like the kid’s room.
Over-matching with your furniture or drapes will make your room appear stiff and rigid, as opposed to soft and inviting. Not the look you want, right? Instead, choose a carpet color or pattern that compliments rather than matches the rest of the room’s décor.
Bigger sometimes is better. If you want to make a room in your home appear larger than it actually is, choose light-colored carpet like eggshell or pale tones. Lighter colors will help reflect more light, making a room feel bright and open.
On the flip side, if you want to make a large room like a master bedroom feel cozier, try a dark carpet.
That’s right. Rugs on top of your carpet. (Crazy, right?) Follow these design “rules” to make the look seem funky, not forced: textured, graphic or patterned rugs to go over neutral, plain carpet or, plain, non-patterned rugs over busy carpets.
Basically, just don’t mix patterns with patterns or plain with plain!
