The 4th of July is a few days away! How are you celebrating? To make this holiday of fireworks, watermelon and hot dogs the best celebration ever, try a few of these tips:

Bust Bugs. Insects love a good party just as much as humans, but they’re much less fun to hang out with. To keep bugs at bay, cover your food (when it’s not being eaten), distance the trash can from your feast and sprinkle a few cucumbers on the ground around your table (ants hate cucumbers). Tip: Throw a handful of sage and rosemary directly on the coals when you grill. Not only will these herbs keep bugs away, they’ll smell great!

Get Patriotic. If you’re throwing a party, make your guests really feel the patriotic vibe with a few red, white and blue decorations. We love this mason jar project from It All Started With Paint because it only takes a few minutes to make, but would still make George Washington proud. Paint each jar a different color or turn them into a makeshift American flag. For more quick décor ideas, check out these 4-Minute 4th of July Decorations.

Eat Well. It’s hard to celebrate the 4th of July without awesome food – grilled goodness, fresh fruit and cool drinks dominate the holiday celebration scene. Take the standard hot dog and bag-o-chips combo up a notch with a few appetizers on a stick, star-spangled watermelon or red, white and blue boozicles. If grilling is your game, check out these alternate foods that taste awesome with a little char (grilled avocado, anyone?).

Stay Safe. The 4th of July is a laid-back holiday filled with things like cold beer and pool parties, but it’s also a holiday full of potential fire hazards! Thousands of people are sent to the emergency room each year on the 4th due to holiday-related injuries. Don’t toss your fireworks and charcoal just yet! Check out this Fire Safety on the 4th of July infographic to keep your guests free from danger.
