2X4: Four Fantastic Uses for Flour

We’re all about flour’s power. It makes your pancakes fluffy and keeps your Bundt cake from sticking to the pan, but did you know it can also help you loosen a stubborn lid? Find out more about this baking staple:

Ripen Hard Avocados. Buying avocados can be tough, especially out of season. If you buy a rock-hard avocado and can’t wait a week to make your favorite guacamole recipe, speed up the ripening process by placing it in a deep bowl. Cover the avocado completely with white flour, and then let it sit for a day. The avocado will be ripe and ready to eat!

Loosen Tight Lids. Sometimes lids get stuck. And that’s okay. If you have a few stubborn jars in the fridge, don’t resign yourself to a mini-battle every time you want a snack. Instead, outsmart the problem with a little bit of flour. The next time you struggle with a lid, wipe the container’s edge with flour before replacing the lid. It will be a cinch to open the next time around!

Make Sculpting Clay. Lions, tigers...or maybe a spaceship? The sky’s the limit with sculpting clay. Even better, you don’t have to run to the store if your kid is feeling crafty – you can make it yourself! All you need for this project is flour, salt, water and vegetable oil (food coloring optional). Mix it together over the stove and you have play dough! For more detailed instructions, visit Instructables. If you’re not in a DIY mood, buy one of these options from the AllSewnUP store on Etsy, instead.

Polish Copper. To give your copper a good shine, mix equal parts flour, salt and white vinegar. Apply the paste to your copper object and let it fully dry. Then, buff it off with a soft cloth and enjoy your gleaming mug! For more copper cleaning tricks, read: Keep Copper Clean & Clever Copper Creations.
