Your home is a lot of things. It’s where you relax in the evening. It’s a watering hole for friends and family. It’s your refuge from the outside world.
That’s why we want to help you make it better. We’re not just talking about the surface things like paint and countertops (although we do cover them). We’re talking about everything - the air you breathe, the water you drink, the electricity that keeps your house lit at night. The foundation that supports your house and the systems that keep it humming.
That’s why we created BrightNest.
Whether your home is brand new or it was built in the 1950s, it needs ongoing care to stay healthy. But, we know there are also a lot of other things going on in your life. So, we’re here to help. This is our commitment to you:
BrightNest was founded in 2011 by Justin Anthony and Allen Shulman, who shared a vision of helping people take better care of their homes. In January of 2012, BrightNest graduated from the Palo Alto-based 500 Startups Accelerator Program, and then set up shop in Denver, CO.
In the summer of 2013, BrightNest was happily acquired by Angie’s List. This exciting change opened up many new and exciting possibilities for our future, and we’re now focused on working with Angie’s List to accomplish our shared goal: making it easier for you to care for your home.
Justin is a rare combination of technology expert and leader. When Allen approached him with his idea for BrightNest, Justin was completely enthralled, and it’s been a full-fledged “bromance” ever since. Justin has worked in the for- and non-profit sectors, and always strives to be a part of something that measures success not just by a bottom line, but by its contribution to society. He also loves all things food and drink related.
Why I Love My Home: The garden.
Allen spent 25 years mastering his craft as a custom home builder in Chicago. He can identify a countertop surface from forty yards away – even soapstone. Then he can tell you how to properly maintain it. A veritable encyclopedia of home maintenance knowledge, Allen was frustrated that he couldn’t continue providing his clients with ongoing support to help them keep their homes in great shape. So he called up his friend, Justin Anthony, and they started working on a way to redefine home maintenance. When he’s not working on BrightNest stuff, Allen loves to play floor hockey and spend time with his family.
